Racing at
Caistor:
There was racing here before the close of the eighteenth
century. The advertisements of the 1802 and subsequent meetings state that the
course is at Rothwell Stackyard.
1802: 29th April
Mr Grant's Bother'em, 1-1; Mr Grantham's Binbrooke
Kitty, 2-2; Mr Wood's b. horse, dis.
1804: 8th May
The Hunter's Plate of £50, Mr Harnew's Champion,
1-4; Mr Grantham's Who-would-have-thought-it, 4-1-2; Mr West's Carlton, 3-3-3;
Mr Richardson's Barometer, 2-2-4.
Same day a main of cocks for 50gs by some gentlemen of
Caistor and Lincoln was won by the latter by one battle.
1815: 6th May
Hunter's Plate of £50, Mr Harnew's b.m., by Driver;
Capt. Wright's b.h. Wentworth, by Fitzwilliam; Mr Skipworth's b.h. Brobdignag,
by Idris; Mr Walkden's b.m. Bonny Lass, by Idrid; Mr Cartwright's b.m. by
Pilgrim; Mr Marris's ch.m. by Baronal; Mr B Nicholson's ch.h. by Alworthy. Won
by Mr Cartwright. Match for 50gs, Mr B Nicholson's ch.h. by Alworthy, beat Mr
Cartwright's bay horse.
The stewards were Mr P Skipworth and Mr W Richardson,
both prominent Lincolnshire hunting men and breeders of bloodstock. Mr William
Kirby was clerk of the course. After the races there was dinner at the George
Inn at 5 p.m.
1826: 4th April
Macaroni Stakes of £10 each, with £20 added,
for horses which have been regularly hunted with the Brocklesby, Burton or South
Wold Hounds during the season 1825-6. Two mile heats.
