Please describe the type of services
available in the town that cater for its surrounding villages e.g. transport
is there a regular bus ervice, foodshops, library etc |
12. Please state the problems/gaps that you
have identified in your town:
The range of facilities offered is weak particularly
in relation to the market, retail, places to eat
and drink and places to visit.
- No community newspaper or local radio access point.
- No evening or week-end bus service to Grimsby, Scunthorpe or Lincoln.
- No Farmers Market. No Optician.
- No bookies. Limited further / adult education and IT facilities.
- No cinema and very limited facilities for teenagers other than youth
club (3 eve per week in term time only).
- No citizens advice bureau.
- No tourist information centre.
- Very limited range of overnight accommodation.
- No Hotel.
- No Youth Hostel.
- Need for environment uplift of buildings and shops.
- No access point for advice on housing availability.
- No day care centre for the elderly or infirm.
- Limited tourist facilities and inadequate signage.
- Need to develop the historic aspects of a potentially attractive Georgian
town with Roman origins (Roman camp).
|
The problems/gaps can be identified
by carrying out a simple audit, such as the template. |
13. Please explain what difference would the
provision of the facilities identified in Q12 make to your own town over
the next 5/10 years and how a healthcheck would particularly help your
town at this time?
The remedying of the town's appearance together
with the improvement in the quality of services offered to visitors
will attract people to the town.
The improvement in public transport will also encourage people in the
surrounding villages to do their shopping in the town.
Both of these will boost the economy of the area and provide employment
for local people, particularly young people who, at present, leave the
town to find work elsewhere.
By boosting the economy of the town the premises currently standing
empty will be taken back into use.
As employment opportunities improve, the learning
facilities (to be provided under the SRB programme) will be extended
into more specialised areas in response to demand.
Caistor is currently in a very depressed state
with buildings & shops in danger of becoming derelict and in need
of serious restoration. The number of businesses has declined severely
over recent years. A health check would identify missing facilities
and hopefully establish a list of priorities which the recently formed
Caistor Development Partnership can actively pursue in partnership with
external funding agencies.
|
Please explain how the town would
benefit from the support |
Please add any comments you feel are relevant:
Caistor is rapidly becoming a dormitory town and there
is a constant erosion of facilities with the never ending tendency to
centralise in the larger centres of population. The town needs an impetus
to re-establish businesses and other organisations. In particular it
needs to improve the facilities for young people and the over 60’s.
The population is aging and needs appropriate facilities. There are
few education and employment opportunities for school leavers who often
have no choice but to move away.
Caistor is ideally situated for easy access to the
whole of the North Lincolnshire area. The town is located on the western
edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, an area of outstanding natural beauty
(AONB) on the Viking Way just off the A46 Fosse Way between Lincoln
and Grimsby at the A46 / A1084 / A1173 / B1225 Junction.
